Only knowing a little bit of the context, it seems like there’s been a lot of resistance in the North of Nigeria to efforts at education the populace. Boko Haram started as an organization dedicated to eliminating the influence of the Western education system on Muslims.

Hi, Malaysian here. I had a Nigerian lecturer in my university who is an Igbo (southeast). He once told us that because the northern Hausa-Fulani Muslims were generally poor and low educated, they saw joining the army as their way to change their life – which explains the Hausa-Fulani dictatorship via *coup d’état* in the 1970s.
[Just as there is ethnic conflict in Nigeria for years (to the extent that the Igbo once tried to breakaway), we Malaysia have our racism or ethnic tension too. When this Nigerian lecturer was teaching us, our prime minister was Najib Razak, who came out with his political slogan “1Malaysia” but we knew it was just empty talk. This of my lecturer even told us that they too have been talking about “one Nigeria” for years and even rotate the presidential office between three different regions but ethnic tension still persisted and could never achieve unity]

It’s more to do with history, demographics and geography combined.
Much of Nigerian infrastructure is in the south where the sea is, but the main west Africa is where Islam thrived.

lived there for 2 and a half years. The stuff I saw happen there you can never unsee.
What is even the implication here? Muslims = dumb and backwards? Are we suddenly going to ignore that the northern part of the whole African continent which is majority Muslim is far more educated than sub Saharan Christian countries? Also your post history is extremely weird to say the least.

Maybe I’m going crazy but doesn’t this map show Islam as majority religion in both places? The Christian area is only listed as less than 50%. I assume the rest in that area is mostly Islam?

I honestly feel like correlation does not equal causality here. The religious differences are also probably based in past geopolitical differences as well as geography here.
Literacy rates here are divided along the Sahel region of Africa which is a line between agricultural grasslands and forests of the south, and the Sahara desert in the north. We’re talking about farming villages vs shepherds.
I also should point out that those regions in the north have very few people, which is why the literacy rate is at 77.6% when it’s a Muslim majority country.
I think both Christians and Muslims try to push scripture onto their believers. Islam even has old traditions and takes pride in children memorizing the entire Quran as well as teaching people how to read it. If anything, not being literate means you didn’t engage with scripture reading which religions encouraged.

the biggest reason for this is that in radical islamists regions, women are not even allowed to leave the house, let alone study.

Nigeria’s north is also the most rural and underdeveloped part of the country, and it is dealing with armed militants, so I can see several obstacles to education besides religion, which this map seems to imply. Granted, the aforementioned militias are Islamists, but there are other countries in Africa that don’t deal with jihadists and still have literacy issues.

Everyone saying “corelation doesn’t mean causation” doesn’t know anything about boko haram. While yes, it is an important factor that north of nigeria is poorer, it is as much important that boko haram, literally by its name, is gonna block any attempts at investment into education. Also, boko haram is one of the results of poverty in northern nigeria, but It’s also depening it further.
Gotta start a group called Boko Halal

Classic correlation does not imply causation. 🍿
