"Serenity Found: A Radiant Summer Sunset in Crested Butte, Colorado"
As the day’s final embers died out, the town of Crested Butte, Colorado, transformed into a canvas of warm, golden hues. The summer sun, now low on the horizon, cast a gentle glow over the mountainous landscape, bathing the Chrome Crags and the Maroon Bells in a soft, golden light. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming wildflowers, and the gentle rustle of leaves in the gentle breeze. It was as if the very essence of tranquility had descended upon this picturesque mountain town.
The sky, a brilliant blue early in the day, had gradually deepened into a kaleidoscope of pinks, oranges, and purples, a masterpiece of nature’s coloring. The peak of Silver Queen Mountain, a towering giant in the center of the valley, still wore a crown of snow, its rugged beauty unrelenting. At its foot, the river, once a foamy torrent, had slowed to a gentle lap at the shore, its gurgling waters lapping at the rocks like a soothing lullaby.
As the sun dipped lower, the light became even more diffused, imbuing the landscape with an air of serenity. The sky turned a deep shade of cerulean, punctuated by a few wispy clouds, their wind-sculpted tendrils stretching across the sky like wisps of cotton candy. The mountains, once sharp and jagged, softened, their ruggedness smoothing out into gentle folds and curves.
As the sun’s final rays disappeared below the horizon, the sky erupted in a burst of color, a riot of pinks, purples, and oranges that was almost surreal. The mountains, bathed in this warm, golden light, appeared as if set aflame, as if the very stones themselves were aglow with an inner radiance. The air was heavy with the scent of smoke from distant campfires, a reminder of the community that thrived in this alpine gem.
As the darkness approached, the stars began to twinkle in the sky, like diamonds scattered across the fabric of the universe. The silence was almost palpable, the only sound the soft rustling of leaves and the distant hooting of an owl, a soothing serenade to accompany the winding down of another day in this magnificent mountain town.
Crested Butte, a tiny gem nestled in the heart of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, is a haven for those seeking the elusive tranquility of the great outdoors. This summer sunset, in particular, was a reminder of the simple joys of life: the beauty of nature, the peace that comes from being surrounded by its majesty, and the serenity that arises from basking in its splendor.
As the stars continued to twinkle above, the mountains plunged into the darkness, the scent of smoke and wildflowers hanging heavy in the air. And in the distance, the gentle lapping of the river continued, a soothing accompaniment to the quiet of the night. In Crested Butte, the summer sunset had come and gone, leaving behind a reminder of the beauty and tranquility that lay just beyond the horizon.

I was laser focused on trying to find a good composition with some flowers and Gothic Mountain while trying to avoid the bajillion and one mosquitoes interested in dining on me. There was a very slight breeze, not enough to deter the skeeters but just enough to make focus stacking nearly impossible. Eventually the light started to fade and I happened to turn around and was immediately struck (ow!) by this flowery hillside below the last glowing clouds of sunset. I hurried to find a good spot and cranked up the ISO and aperture for max depth of field and ended up with this.
Also, is it just me or does the compression algorithm reduce the contrast of images here? The original was richer and had quite a bit more contrast than the version displayed here seems to.
