Snowbound 2024: Tasmania, Australia – A Winter Wonderland

In a rare occurrence, the island state off the southeastern coast of Australia is expected to receive a massive dump of snow, creating a winter wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
What’s behind the snowfall?
A strong high-pressure system is moving eastward from the Great Australian Bight, triggering a prolonged cold front that will bring heavy snowfall to the higher elevations of Tasmania. The system is expected to make landfall on New Year’s Eve, bringing with it a plunge in temperatures and a soaking of snow.
When and where can you expect snowfall?
According to meteorologists, the snowfall is expected to begin on December 31st, 2023, and continue into January 1st, 2024. The snowfall will be most intense in the higher elevations, including the Cradle Mountain range, the West Coast Range, and the Central Plateau. Some areas may receive up to 30 cm (12 inches) of snow, while lower-lying areas may see as much as 10 cm (4 inches).
Where to go to experience the snow?

A recent image taken during a recent five-day solo backpacking trip in Tasmania. On the last day the clouds rolled in and covered the mountain range in a thick whiteout. Slowly trudging my way across the plato I stumbled across this scene and took one of my favourite images of the trip. The bonsai looking bush is Nothofagus gunnii, the only temperate deciduous bush native to Australia, residing solely in the temperate highlands of Tasmania. In Autumn it turns vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red for a special few weeks a year.
