Pandemic opened our collective eyes. I really thought change would finally be cemented. Alas corps just waited long enough and we’re right back to slave labor mode.

Absolutely agree! A 32-hour work week would be a game-changer for work-life balance and mental health. It’s time to adapt to modern realities!

32hrs/wk is really low balling it when we’ve more than doubled productivity.
Don’t forget at least 30 paid vacation days per year if you’re from the US.

Fuck that. Total renegotiation. Start at fifty/fifty split of labor & profits. So that means a 20 hour work week (current 40 hour divided in half) 50% of all profits distributed to all employees.

My dad doesn’t understand why my house isn’t as neat and clean as our house was growing up. He doesn’t understand what a difference it made that my mom could stay home while he went to work.

This kind of work week is attainable if it is what we desire. We just need to stop tolerating the guidelines written by the ruling class for their profits

Some full-time government agency employees already enjoy 32-hour work weeks thanks to Compressed Days Off (CDOs). Poor MAGA among them, they’ll regret President Musk and DOGE mandating 80+ hour weeks just like SpaceX.

I currently have two part time jobs, and I work around 32 hours each week on average. One of these jobs includes housing and a meal plan so I actually make out pretty well, and it’s incredible how much better my mental health is with those extra 8 hours of free time (plus all the time I save not cooking).

If you calculate it based on prices, CEO raises, and corporate wealth growth, then it should be ~20hr work week at most for the current standard of pay.

Yup, it was designed with a partner who works 40 hours a week to do all of the house keeping. Doesn’t have to be a housewife though. It’s why I’d be perfectly content being a stay at home father if I married a career-driven woman. I would probably still find something I could do from home like coding, web design, or even writing, just to stay sane, but there’s no shame in caring for your home and children as a man

In my workplace, a niche area of healthcare, we are already understaffed and underpaid. Our reimbursement rates depend on the state budget/medicaid. We’ve not seen pay increases since 2021,
I would absolutely love a 32 or even 35 hour work week. I have to work 2 jobs, 60 hours a week. I’m exhausted, but there isn’t any option as a single person. But I’d really actually love getting paid a living wage that kept up with the cost of living.

Great in theory but will never happen because the rich aren’t going to hire more people to work their 7 day a week business.
Would likely have more adverse effects because they would then only hire part time to avoid insurance costs.

Probably the best way to get people to start having more kids. Either one person needs to be able to make the income to support a family in a regular job or we need more time by working less to support the family.

This isn’t even accurate though.
Workers used to have to work every day. They fought and bled and died to get it down to 40 hours.
Women have always worked and worked hard – just often for little to no actual wages.

Also remember that there was less competition for jobs back when women didnt work. Now we have more people competing for fewer jobs which will drive down wages due to supply and demand. Though since households now have access to dual income then people will buy more as well…its quite complicated.
Overall, though…if you think it’s bad now, AI/Automation is going to make it worse.

With full employment and modern levels of productivity there’s no reason why we should have to work more than 20 hours a week. At least for most jobs. Certain jobs that people find meaningful should be open to working as much as you want, such as being a scientist or musician or whatnot.

I vote for the DuPont schedule. In the 50s DuPont experimented with all sorts of work schedules and the ideal schedule they found (safest, highest quality and highest satisfaction) was 5 days 10 hours a day for 3 weeks then one week off each month.

It’s called being self-employed. You can work whatever hours you want.
When you are your own boss, you can pay yourself whatever you want to make. How awesome is that!
