As is generally the case, the original version of this Elaine May comedy is far superior to Farrelly Brother’s 2007 remake. Here Charles Grodin marries schlubby, nudgey, and slightly zoftig Jeannie Berlin, only to realize on their honeymoon that he would reach for the brass ring by wedding and bedding the ideal WASPy heiress Cybill Shepherd. Writing with more acid than usual, Neil’s Simon’s excellent script is based on Bruce Jay Friedman’s short story “A Change of Plan.” A great companion piece to May’s other great comedy “A New Leaf.” Thanks for posting.
