The forest people were kind this time.
Same thing happened to me, except the guy picked up my keys. Took them to the grocery store where they scanned my discount tag and got my phone number, boom returned keys.
this is actually so smart cuz if you pick it up, you may not run into whoever lost it. but if you leave a marker for them around where the item is lost, theyre likely to see it if they retrace their steps (what most would do if they lose something)
Who needs GPS when a kind stranger creates a perfectly visible sign to save the day?😅

On a side-note: If a kid goes missing in the woods, this is what we teach them.
1. Hug a tree (pretend one particular tree is a friend and hug them to calm down),
2. Make a three (place three twigs, or three pinecones, or three rocks visible on the footpath or somewhere visible) and
3. Shelter thee (build a little lean-to of branches and stuff, to keep them occupied and stop them from wandering further away where it will be harder to find them).
So if you find three twigs side-by-side, that might be a sign there is a lost kid nearby, hugging a tree and waiting for the adults to do their thing (finding them). You can be a hero!

Rail trail people are like this. I know because I have been the helpful and the helped on my many miles through PA’s rail trails.
Some days he surrounds them with twigs, and some days he melts the snow one snow flake at a time.

Lost my car key in the hotel parking lot. Thank god it was found soonest. We would have been in trouble.
Lost my keys on a hike, backtracked and couldn’t find them last week. Someone picked them up and turned them into the office at the base of the mountain(found out yesterday as my gym called and informed me). Wish they did something like this or went to the parking lot and figured out which car they belonged to and left them there. Ended up having to get someone to get my spare and come all the way to get me at the top of the mountain.
See, I just lock my keys in my car and never worry about them getting lost.
This should be taught in schools.
