Those soaps were used in every French school when I was a kid in the mid/late 80s.
Same soap since 1792.

This was common in a lot of public bathrooms in South Korea. Known as jerk off soap amongst expats. Not sure if it’s still as common these days.
Fiirst encountered these in Korean public restrooms. Definitely weird at first.
After some research, it’s surprisingly hygenic so long as you lather appropriately.
Had a similar experience at a truck stop. There wasn’t a fancy sign, and it pointed up.

Not trying to be rude but that’s not what I imagine an upscale restaurant bathroom to look like. Cracked frame, deteriorating walls, nasty soap with calcium and lime deposits all over it, trashy faded wallpaper, etc.
Looks almost exactly like a cacao fruit.

Seems like there would be a sloppy mess under that, from everybody’s wet hands and soap suds. Also it’s cracked and looks like the dried out bar of soap on the utility sink in the mud room that was Dad’s clean up station
Bar soap on a spool is nothing. It was the perpetual cloth towel dispenser to dry hands back in the day that was gross.
You really have to trust that soap is being used as directed.

I recently went back to bar soap. It is so much better than gels. I can literally feel that my hands are cleaner after using bar soap.

One time I was in Nepal taking a public bus. We stopped at a rest stop in the mountains. I had to take a shit so used the public restroom. In Nepal people just wipe their asses with their hand and some water – no toilet paper. The sink had one communal bar of soap. You can only imagine…
