Honestly hope they get nothing. I know not everyone feels the same way about the snitch, but it would be karmic irony if their reward got delayed and denied via a rules algorithm.
**The McDonald’s employee who helped police trace a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO might miss out on the substantial $60,000 reward.**
Brian Thompson, 50, was shot in the back last Wednesday (December 4) outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where his company, UnitedHealthcare, was holding an investors’ meeting. A 26-year-old man has since been charged with Thompson’s murder.
Luigi Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Monday (December 9) after an employee reportedly tipped off the police. The police had launched a widespread manhunt and appealed to the public for assistance. The New York Police Department initially offered a $10,000 reward for information on the suspect. Over the weekend, the FBI joined the investigation, adding an additional $50,000 to the reward, which led to hundreds of tips.
The McDonald’s employee noticed Mangione acting suspiciously around 9:15 AM and reported that he had fraudulent documents. Upon arrest, Mangione was found with fake IDs, a ‘ghost’ gun, a silencer, clothes, and a mask matching the suspect’s description. He was charged with murder and four other counts, including firearms charges, just hours later.
However, the question remains whether the worker will be able to claim the $60,000 reward. The rules are complex, as the FBI portion of the reward requires tipsters to be nominated by an investigating agency, such as the Department of Defense or the FBI, and then reviewed by an interagency committee. If approved, the recommendation is passed to the Secretary of State for final approval.
Additionally, the full reward amount may be disputed, as payment depends on various factors, including the value of the information provided, the level of threat, the severity of danger or injury, and the degree of cooperation.
For the NYPD’s $10,000 reward, tipsters receive a unique reference number through Crime Stoppers, which is essential for checking the investigation’s status and lodging a claim. If the informant called 911 instead of Crime Stoppers, they might be unable to claim the reward. Moreover, the rewards are only paid out if the arrest leads to an indictment or conviction, meaning the McDonald’s employee could be waiting a while and might not receive anything at all.

Remember that you never get this kind of huge reward. The guy who gave the tips that lead to the execution of Ben Laden never received the reward.
