His parents were hardcore abolitionists. They were very active in the northern states fighting for abolitionist causes. It was one of the reasons he was given command of the 54th.
He’s a really interesting guy. I helped my wife research him as part of a larger project. His journals are fascinating. He was upper-strata society and had traveled all over the world. It gave him a unique view of the war and the responsibility of the Union. In fact, he was of the anti-Lincoln opinion that complete eradication of the south was the best solution

In death, Col. Shaw’s father ensured his son’s legacy stood strong, even against the Confederate’s petty insult.

While Fort Wagner was the only fort that never fell in the American Civil War, the soldiers of the 54th were the only warriors to make it into Ft. Wagner’s bowl.

Robert Gould Shaw really left a legacy, didn’t he? Goes to show respect and unity can outshine hate.

The movie “Glory”was about him and his regiment. Oneof the greatest scores in cinema and a murderers row of great actors, then virtually unknown at the time.

The union troops wanting to recover him are shit, too. Either they’re just as racist (not unlikely, seeing what life for black people was like even after the end of slavery) or they’re the kind of military fuckheads that don’t regard common soldiers as real people and have only officers count (otherwise they’d do that for everyone in a mass grave, not just the colonel).
I love the movie “Glory ” ,a story about his life.

Wow, he looks just like the actor who portrayed him in Glory…I like the fact that the movie did not go overboard with trying to make him a superhero but just let the facts speak for themselves….BTW, it was a great movie..
