Skiing the Glory of Mt. Alyeska: A View Unparalleled

Perched 3,200 feet above the ocean, the ski lift creaked to life as I settled into the bucket seat. The bright winter sun cast a warmth over the landscape, bathing the rugged peaks of the Chugach Mountains in a golden glow. Ahead, the sheer face of Mt. Alyeska unfolded like a canvas, waiting to be explored by those brave enough to navigate its slopes. As a photographer, I had sought out this location for the very reason: the spectacular views from the top were sure to leave me awe-inspired.

As the ski lift climbed higher, the wind whipping through my beard and the rush of air chilling my face, my eyes scanned the horizon, drinking in the majesty of the Alaskan landscape. The ski resort spread out before me like a canvas of powder and sun-crisped snow. Runs of varying difficulty undulated across the mountain face, each one a distinct stripe of white against the backdrop of ancient glaciers, serpentine rivers, and towering peaks.

Now and then, a flock of ptarmigan flew past, their iridescent feathers shimmering as they vanished into the white. The only sounds accompanying the lift’s gentle movements were the creak of steel and the distant crack of snow and ice shearing off the mountain peaks.

At the summit, the lift finally came to rest, and I set my camera aside to breathe in the stillness and marvel at the breathtaking vistas unfolding before me. Beyond the ski runs, an unbroken expanse of water stretched to the east – the Pacific Ocean. Gulls rode the windy updrafts, playing hide-and-seek in the wispy clouds gathering offshore. In the distant hazy blue, snow-capped peaks rose like ghostly sentinels.

Turning my attention to Mt. Alyeska herself, I noticed the patchwork of ski trails grafted onto the mountain, some of which were accessible by chairlift, and others by steep, gnarled hike-a-partition routes. The peak above me was a steeper, more rugged wall, its rocky outcrops and sheer faces forming the perfect arena for accomplished skiers seeking a high-speed thrill ride.

It wasn’t just the vista from the summit that stirred me; the sheer dimensions of Mt. Alyeska itself – its geological wonder, the sheer might and majesty of stone, ice, and wind-worn granite – brought awe to the forefront, the photographer in me unable to resist capturing the symphony of shapes, shades, and textures. The intricate networks of ridges and glacial troughs offered countless vantage points and a photographer’s playground unlike anywhere else.

As my stay on the mountain unfolded, I became increasingly intimate with the unique character of this Alaskan gem: Mt. Alyeska. The rugged, imposing aspect of its terrain had little to do with accessibility – the slopes were notoriously unforgiving –, and everything to do with grandeur. It presented challenges, certainly, to anyone willing to test its slopes, but also promise. The rewards were, undeniably, profound, as if the skiers who conquered its challenging paths were awarded a slice of the sublime.

If one were to imagine perfection – a convergence of land, sea, and mount, where human endeavor danced harmoniously with the ancient power of the earth and wind – it would closely resemble the vista from that singular ski run on the Chugach Mountains.

Words cannot capture the entire tapestry of Mt. Alyeska’s sheer wonder, its unshakable power, which had left me in still awe, as I gradually, reluctantly bid farewell, bound for the chair lift to begin the journey home, the photographic memories we’ve shared on this slope will forever resonate within, forever etched in time like the etched shapes and textures on the skin of this ancient mountain.
