Do people not understand what a visual novel is or is this just a joke people keep making?

Let’s be real for a second here, most fans of Visual Novels only play them for the story (or stories in some cases because multiple paths and endings), the art, the characters (goes hand in hand with Story, but sometimes you like some characters but hate the story) and not much else.

I have never seen a single visual novel fan say that. And also, there should be up and down arrows along with X because it has choices that players should choose. There are also multiple VNs that have combat and other mechanics.

The very few elements that can spice things up is puzzles. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney series had it right by adding puzzles and courtroom evaluations that the player needs to think of.
Otherwise the game really needs to have good writing, usually revolving around an attractive theme to be worth playing.

I played one visual novel. It’s like a book* at most, more like a comic. You either stay for the story or you leave. (I wanted to try to go to the other ending, but in the end I never even finish the first half of the game). (the novel largely requires the player’s interest. Just like books require interest from the reader)
