This stunning lake is nestled in the western part of the park, surrounded by the rugged mountains of the Western Fells, and is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and those seeking solitude and serenity.

A Gem of Nature

Wastwater is one of the lesser-known lakes in the Lake District, which is part of its charm. Its secluded location and limited access make it a hidden gem, often overlooked by the crowds that flock to more popular spots like Windermere and Ullswater. As a result, Wastwater offers a unique and peaceful experience, with minimal human disturbance and an abundance of wildlife and natural beauty to take in.

Scenic Surroundings

The lake is set against the majestic backdrop of the Western Fells, which offer some of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring scenery in the Lake District. The surrounding hills and mountains are covered in a tapestry of heather, bracken, and grasses, with the occasional rocky outcrop and dry stone wall adding texture and character to the landscape. The sky is often clear and blue, with the sun shining down on the lake, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Water Sports and Activities

Wastwater offers a variety of water sports and activities for visitors, including kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. The calm and shallow waters make it an ideal spot for beginners, while the deeper waters and abundance of fish make it a paradise for experienced anglers. Drakewalls, a small island in the middle of the lake, is a popular spot for boat tours and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Walking and Hiking

The surrounding hills and mountains offer some of the most spectacular walking and hiking trails in the Lake District. The western edge of the lake is flanked by the mighty Western Fells, which offer challenging and rewarding hikes with breathtaking views. The nearby Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, is just a short walk away, offering experienced hikers a thrilling and unforgettable experience.

Wildlife and Birdwatching

Wastwater is a haven for wildlife, with a wide range of species calling the lake and surrounding area home. Visitors can spot red squirrels, hibernating bats, and a variety of birds, including ospreys, peregrine falcons, and golden eagles. The lake itself is home to a variety of fish, including trout, char, and salmon, making it a paradise for anglers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Getting There

Wastwater is easily accessible by car from the nearby towns of Gosforth and Buttermere, with parking available at the lake’s edge. Public transportation options are limited, but local bus services connect to nearby towns and villages. Visitors can also hike or take a shuttle bus from nearby Wasdale Head, which offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
