2D Animation is expensive and at the time, was waning, in popularity, but I’m sure it will be successful again if it makes a comeback in theaters.

It was CEO Michael Eisner. Early 2000s was a tough time for Disney due to various finance issues (California Adventure failed, problems with Pixar etc) and the animation suffered. Look it up.
The film Road to El Dorado i remember they were both going at it, the film is for adults i guess

3D animation happened. It’s was “easier” and cheaper. You could also do more. It also brought more money since it was new and interesting. Now over the course of 30 years most major studios have lost the ability to do 2D animation outside of Japan
They made it smooth & fluid.
