I know it’s a cult classic now but they originally set out to make a B movie and made a masterpiece instead

Tropic thunder. RDJ needed to be perfect to pull off that role and the writing had to be perfect for the jokes to make fun of racist ppl and not black people, and they all pulled it off. So much could have and should have went wrong but it didn’t.

Iron-Man.
Back in 2007, there were very few Marvel comic book movies that had been truly successful that didn’t involve Spider-Man or the X-Men . The MCU wasn’t a thing yet. Iron-Man was a B-list hero that mainstream didn’t really care about and Robert Downy Jr. had a pretty lousy rep.
There was so much that could have gone wrong with the early MCU that could have killed it before it got off the ground, but they managed a hit with Iron-Man that proved other Marvel heroes could be marketable to the mainstream, pretty much revitalized RDJ’s career and made him a name that could headline films and put butts in the seats.

Funny when you’re not even sure it’s supposed to be, badass fight scenes, acting that doesn’t take itself seriously that ends up being enduring, a story so random ai wouldn’t be able to come up with it.
Oh yeah, best quotable lines.

A movie about a board game. Yet it is one of the greatest comedic movies ever.
The incredible cast is what makes that movie work when you consider some of the talent they had.
Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Michael McKean, Christopher Lloyd are all legendary actors in their own right. Every one else is doing a fantastic job too. I don’t think you could have casted it better in all honesty.

Taken was a junker an aging Neeson did for the money. It’s formulaic stuff but he elevates it and it kickstarted his successful career as the geriatric action hero.
I have seen some low budget films made by inexperienced people that were pretty good. If you poke around and look at a lot of stuff you will find some rough diamonds.

If you’re not old enough to remember when it came out you can’t understand how this movie came out of nowhere and completely took over pop culture for awhile, it was weird and different and not like any other movie out there, it’s one of those cultural moment things you can’t replicate sort of like Barbieheimer

… I thought I was going into any old naughties era, Adam Sandler comedy shlock movie. What I actually watched was a sporadically funny but deeply moving film about how quickly life can pass you by. The only thing I’ve seen since that captures the same mood is About Time.

The Butterfly Effect (2004) with Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart. It’s one of the few times I went into a theater not knowing what it expect and it blew me away. The theatrical ending with him seeing that the love of his life, who he had to drive away in order to save, was okay after so many years still gets to me.
