What are you intending to attach to these wires? If it is a plain old light bulb, it won’t really matter. If you are installing something with specific wiring instructions, this is where the voltage meter comes in. Check the voltage across the two black wires and record the voltage. Check the voltage of each wire (with the switch in the on position). One voltage probe on the wire, the other touching the ground wire (I don’t see one) or the metal mounting box, record the voltage. If one wire has no voltage measuring to ground, that would be considered the ‘white or common’ wire. If both wires are ‘hot’ showing voltage to ground, it should not matter. If the voltage is not equal for the two wires with voltage, there is probably a fault in the branch circuit and an electrician should be called. In the US most lighting circuits are 115-120v, I could be 230-240v this is when both black wires would be energized. Europe standard is 240v is why I call this out.
