To be fair: the ruling *and* the opposition parties unanimously voted to cancel the martial law.
In the US, the Republicans would happily have gone along with it if their guy tried it.
This was a Trumpian president enabling a Trump-like coup. And the reason it failed is because people saw his statement that “I’m defending our democracy” as the obvious farce that is was.
Does anyone think Americans by and large are smart enough to see through this if Trump declared martial law and said “The government is a den of thieves and I’m doing this to restore democracy?” HELL NO.
And you know who’s armed to the teeth in this country? The same people who support him. The very same people who say that “we need our guns to save us from an authoritarian government” would 100% defend an authoritarian government if they could be convinced they were doing the opposite.
“End Wokeness” is actually making the case for left-leaning people to start getting guns and frankly, given what just happened in SK, that’s not even half-bad of an argument.

I love all the tough guys who go shooting at the gun range on weekends thinking they are going to stop the US army if it were to enforce martial law.
They were able to do so because they had some politicians who understood that their job is to represent PEOPLE and not money.
I wish our government worked that way. I’m sure you have seen the chart showing public opinion vs legislation. Not even correlated. I say give up guns when the elites and famous decide they don’t need private security.
Guess it’s true what they say—sometimes a small number of people with strong principles can make a big impact. South Korea really knows how to turn the tables when needed!

Every person in the US who is not a Trump supporter should be arming themselves and training with those weapons. The US is not South Korea and every fascist in the US is armed. No one is going to take their guns away. It is time to get with the program and prepare to defend yourself if necessary.

It always cracks me up hearing the extremists in the 2A crowd talking about this like they would be able to do anything at all.
But on the same note there was a near successful insurrection in the US with practically no guns sooo yea we should never give up 2a imagine if they had taken over and the public was disarmed.
I just think we should all be on the same page that it’s actually the lack of guns that protected the people who resisted the military over the last 24 hours. In the US the same situation would have included police and soldiers with a legitimate concern that they themselves were about to be shot. So many firearms just exist among the general public that every peaceful protest can reasonably be assumed to be possible deadly at the drop of a hat.
This is a real fact, soldiers and police are human beings. They’re going to behave differently if they fear for their lives. Some of the pro-gun people want to hunt or something I guess, but a lot of them want law enforcement to be afraid so they’re jumping and trigger happy. It’s not an error, it is their design. Keep the people armed that way law enforcement can never trust the people they are supposed to protect.

Well, the difference between holding a gun in the military and using it on your own people is vast, most soldiers never kill anyone, and it was something like 50,000 rounds of ammo in world war 2, as most soldiers shot way over the heads of the enemies.

This is such a perfect example of why it’s not about guns, it’s about people being organized and standing together. South Korea literally proves it.
Imagine thinking guns are the answer to stopping fascism. South Korea didn’t need guns to defend democracy, they used their people power. Maybe we should focus on *actually* protecting our rights without making everything about violence.

The parliament voted to end the martial law unanimously, and the military (from what I know) has respected that.
Let’s leave the whole gun debate out of this and worry about the fact the president tried to start a coup.

People have become so divided that they can no longer see beyond their political party or ideology. Many have stopped distinguishing between right and wrong and instead blindly support their party, regardless of its actions. If someone aligns with the right wing, they might believe Trump can do no wrong, and if they align with the left wing, they might think Biden is infallible.
