No, he wasn’t a different person, his con just shifted. At this time he was charging customers for Teslas promising “full self driving” with just a software update, taking money for something that could never work. He was scamming the public with his “Hyperloop” bullshit first announced years before. Months after this tweet he would announce the Tesla Semi that would never live up to its insane promises (better than rail, etc), or vaporware that would never be produced like the next Tesla Roadster with ridiculous and unattainable specs – but he took preorders for them. The list goes on.

Anyone not paying attention to the timeline of the Elon change – ask yourself this: why does he have a LENGTHY history of posting VERY liberal policy support up until about 2017? Suddenly, guy meets Putin, flies to see him several times in a year…and now he’s FULL RIGHT WING and basically leading the MAGA movement? In a span of roughly 5-6 years?

I was watching Werner Herzog’s *Lo and Behold* the other night, an excellent documentary from 2016, braodly about the trajectory of the internet. Halfway through there’s a rocket taking off and Herzog mentions SpaceX, and I thought *uh oh*. And moments later, there’s our boy, sitting at a desk talking about Mars, a strange mix of optimism and melancholy. Herzog obviously finds him interesting and seemingly admirable in many ways. There’s a memorable moment when Musk reveals that he doesn’t remember hacing good dreams, but does remember nightmares.
He doesn’t come across poorly, but he does seem uneasy with himself. You can imagine this Musk making the tweet above. It’s harder to imagine this Musk becoming our modern-day Musk but, well, here we are. I wonder how much sleep he gets these days.
Elon has no principals. He says what he thinks everyone wants to hear, and then swoops in to purchase the idea after he has ingratiated himself.
